PENDLETON -- Update 5:52 PM:

Emergency officials are reporting the “Echo Fire”, burning north of Pendleton, has burned between 3000 and 3500 acres.

The fire is 80% contained and they anticipate full containment later tonight. Fire crews will remain on site to mop up any hot spots that remain.

The fire that began around 2:00 p.m. has burned two structures at the origin of the fire.

Fire Departments from Echo, Stanfield, Pendleton, Hermiston, Heppner, Ione, Boardman, and Pilot Rock are responding.

Previous Information:

A fire burning north of Interstate 84 has prompted road closures. At this time, roads in the following areas are closed:

    Stage Gulch Road

    Despain Gulch

    Missouri Gulch

Highway 37 is open at this time.

However, emergency responders have asked that travelers avoid these roads as they may be congested with fire equipment and have limited visibility due to dense smoke from the fire.

The fire started around 2:00 p.m. north of Rew Elevator and has burned in a northeast direction.

The fire is not contained at this time.

Many area fire departments are responding.

More information will follow as it becomes available.
