KENNEWICK -- Mid-Columbia Libraries kicks-off a new reading program called "The Big Read" today.
During the month of October, community members can participate by picking up and reading a copy of The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett.
The libraries are giving out 2,200 copies of the book for free.
Throughout the month, libraries will host book discussions, crime scene investigation programs and writer's workshops.
Mid-Columbia Libraries received a $20,000 grant to put the national program on in our region.
"We're trying to stimulate a conversation so that people can talk about books again. They can have it be part of their dialogue with their neighbors, friends and relatives" said Kyle Cox, Mid-Columbia Libraries.
The kick-off event for "The Big Read" starts at 7 PM tonight at the Kennewick Library on Union Street.
The event features live music, free food and classic cars.
You can also pick up a copy of book for free.
