BURBANK -- After the deaths of two Burbank teens, a community is working together to implement a new change.
Some Burbank community members say they see many drivers going over the speed limit. They say speeding and a dangerous intersection has led to many accidents on Highway 12. Now they are planning to make things right.
"It's time to stop. It needs to stop. Something has to be done and it has to be done soon because it is a very, very treacherous stretch of road," says Sally Michael, Sun Mart Cashier.
Residents like Sally Michael want to install cameras by the stop lights. Right now the speed limit near the intersection is 60, but the community wants to lower it to 45. People have had enough. Petitions are all around the community now. Burbank residents are signing it to put an end to the dangerous intersection.
"Something has to be done right now. We're sending the petition to the Department of Transportation, to the U.S. Highway Department and to our Port Commisisioners. It's not something we need a set of signatures on, it's something needed to show them we're serious," says Laura Schmidt, petitioner.
Community members have been in contact with the Department of Transportation. Traffic Engineer Rick Gifford has been speaking with Burbank residents and he says they are waiting to hear from the state troopers to investigate the accident further, before they decide to make any changes to the intersection.
"Well we're looking into it, but i guess the best way to put it, is we just can't change the speed limit without doing an investigation by state law. The truth is that it doesn't show up as a high accident location at all," says Rick Gifford, Washington Department Of Transportation Traffic Engineer.
